The Mudflats

The ghost of a Viking haunts the mudflats (pictured above) on the northeast corner of Canvey Island. The Vikings have been connected to a skirmish here with King Alfred’s son, Edward. According to sources, nails in some church doors showed traces of Viking skin - evidence that those caught steeling were flayed upon them!

Canvey Island is a reclaimed island in the Thames estuary in Essex, England.

It has an area of 7.12 square miles and is separated from the mainland of south Essex by a network of creeks. Lying only just above sea level it is prone to flooding at exceptional tides, but has nevertheless been inhabited since the Roman invasion of Britain.
